STEPHENS GERMAN HACKAMORE LEATHER HORSE BIT

The Stephens German Hackamore has a chain noseband encased in leather. A Hackamore applies pressure to the horse's nose and chin instead of their mouth. The Hackamore is good for horses whose mouths have cuts, sores or horses that have been injured by other bits. Hackamore's encourage flexion at the poll but are not as effective for turning as most direct pressure mouth piece bits. The leverage and severity increase with the length of the shank. This bit's shank is considered long.

Use: One rein is used with this Hackamore; a rubber, laced or web rein as your main rein connected to the round bit ring on the end of the shank. Cheek pieces from your bridle are connected to the rings on the top of the Hackamore's shank.  Depending on the length of your current cheek pieces, you may need to purchase shorter ones to use with a Hackamore. The leather noseband of the Hackamore should sit slightly above the area where the nasal bone ends and the cartilage begins.

This bit includes a leather chin strap, which is connect to the middle ring. The chin strap must be smooth, flat and adjusted correctly for the Hackamore to work properly. The chin strap should be adjusted to allow the shank to rotate 45 degrees. This Hackamore also includes built in leather mouth guards.

We recommend using a hackastrap with this bit. It should loop through the top of each cheek piece and attach snuggly under the horse's jaw and be placed ahead of the throat latch.
